FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The Freelance Remuda was named a finalist in the Publishing Media Equine-related Blog category for the prestigious Equine Media Awards, presented by American Horse Publications (AHP). The awards are presented June 16 at the conference in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

Finalists in 64 classes were notified they placed in the top five of their divisions. The 2018 competitive field had more than 75 members entering awards, with entries totaling 823 in all categories. Co-hosts of the Freelance Remuda Podcast and co-owners of the Freelance Remuda, Abigail Boatwright and Kate Byars entered the competition with no expectation of advancing, but hoping for the best.

“We are honored to be named a finalist in this category, especially since our blog, website and podcast are just over a year old,” said Kate. “It was a leap of faith to start the Freelance Remuda, but it has brought us together with other equine freelancers. We are ecstatic for the recognition.”

The AHP annual awards contest has recognized equine media professionals since 1974. The 2018 contest draws from material published in 2017 and is open only to AHP members.

In 2018, freelance professionals Abigail Boatwright and Kate Bradley Byars have focused on helping others in the equine media industry through its latest offering, The Freelance Remuda Mentorship Program. The program is for aspiring freelance communicators and those wishing to grow a freelance business. The website continues to publish blog episodes and guest blog posts from industry professionals.

“Our goal is to educate and inform about equine media—through our Mentorship Program on a more individual platform, and reaching a greater audience through our podcast and blog. We feature interviews with professionals working in publishing, marketing, advertising and editing,” said Abigail. “Our blog includes guest blogs and first-person advice to our Freelance Remuda community, and the quarterly podcasts focus on hot topics in the industry, like the one recently posted on contract work.”

About The Freelance Remuda

The Freelance Remuda was founded by veteran freelance professionals Abigail Boatwright and Kate Bradley Byars. Beginning with The Freelance Remuda Podcast, which explores the trials and triumphs surrounding life as a freelancer in equine media, while sharing valuable tips from equine media editors and creatives doing what they love; Abigail and Kate also offer a mentorship program for aspiring freelancers in equine media. The dictionary lists a remuda as: re•mu•da (noun): a herd of horses that have been saddle-broken from which ranch hands choose their mounts for the day. The goal of The Freelance Remuda is to help train up a herd of professionals specializing in equine media, from which editors and businesses can hire to do great work.
